Sleuth by Anthony Shaffer
Performance dates: January 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28 at 8:00 PM, January 22 at 2:00pm
Perfect for a “Friday the 13th,“ Richland Players opens their third play of the season, Sleuth, a cat-and-mouse thriller on the weekend of January 13 and 14. This 1970 Tony Award winning play, written by Anthony Shaffer, is set in the English manor house of Andrew Wyke, an immensely successful mystery writer. Wyke's home reflects his obsession with the inventions and deceptions of fiction and his fascination with games and game playing. Wyke lures his wife's lover, Milo Tindle, to the house and convinces him to stage a robbery of her jewelry, a proposal that sets off a chain of events that leaves the audience trying to decipher where Wyke's game playing ends and reality begins. What better way to spend a winter's night than a good murder mystery. Be advised, this play is given a mild PG rating, for a small amount of language and violence.
Sleuth has been popularized in film twice; first, in 1972, with Sir Laurence Olivier, as Andrew Wyke, and Michael Caine, as Milo Tindle. The Oscar-nominated film won several critical awards for direction, music adaption, and acting. The film was modernized in 2007, with Michael Caine now taking on the role of Andrew Wyke, and Jude Law, playing Milo Tindle.
This cast has some of the best community theater talent around, with Steve Montgomery playing Andrew Wyke, Ted Miller playing Milo Tindle, and Chuck Telfer in the role of Inspector Doppler. Kristin Lerch is excited to be directing her second production with the Richland Players, along with Bill Campbell as Assistant Director. "The chemistry between Steve and Ted as actor opponents was apparent in the audition, and the gamesmanship between these two talented actors as rehearsals progress has delighted both Bill and myself,” Kristin said.
